What Are the Types of Cooling Systems?

October 9th, 2013

Comfort is not just another word, it is the only word that matters when you are hot and bothered and your cooling system isn’t working. When you own the right air conditioning system, staying cool is a breeze. With the right cooling system, you can learn how to control the temperature inside your home.

All heating and cooling units are not the same. In fact, they are designed quite differently, even though their intended purposes are similar.

When you are ready to purchase a cooling system, ask yourself these questions:

  • What factors do the size and model of your unit depend on?
  • What is the size of the foundation?
  • What’s my budget for a new unit?

Alternative Cooling Systems and When to Use Them

Conventional Air Conditioning

Window units are designed to cool individual rooms instead of an entire home or office. They are less costly to operate and more energy efficient. They work best with 115 volts, but they can also run on 230 volts. The average window unit operates with cooling capacities of 5,500 to 14,000 BTUs. When selecting a traditional cooling unit, a larger size isn’t necessarily the better choice. The area of the room should be compared against the size or BTU output of the unit.

Absorption Air Conditioning

Absorption cooling is mainly used in commercial and industrial settings, but is now being considered in larger residential homes. This type of cooling unit is powered by gas filled heating pumps. Businesses and homes using this source of cooling have no electrical source, which makes absorption cooling a renewable energy source.

Radiant Air Conditioning

Radiant cooling systems work best in homes where humidity is moderate. The systems are not recommended for home use, if used alone. However, if they are used with a central cooling system, the energy savings and comfort level can yield even greater savings.
